Leveraging Your Luck

Some people are born with good fortune. Whatever they do, they seem to defy the odds. They always seem to find the perfect parking spot or win the lottery. There is a lot of discussion about luck in the world. But what exactly is it? Is it something beyond our control, or is there a scientific explanation?

Most people will tell you that luck is about being in the right place at the right time with the right people, but there’s a lot more to it. The dictionary defines luck as “events that have an impact on your life but are uncontrollable.” We are delusional if we believe we have complete control over our lives. Even the most meticulous planning encounters the unexpected, and we must adjust to unpredictable players and factors. That is unavoidable. Allowing that unplanned change to play out is a huge component of how lucky we are. Follow these rules and watch how your luck changes.

Put the Effort in – How much luck can you expect if you live in your house like a hermit? Probably not much. If you don’t get out there and take action, you’ll end up in a sad pit of doom with no opportunities. Want to strike it rich? Get to work. Life isn’t a charity.

Go With Your Gut – Lucky people follow their instincts in many aspects of their lives, and intuition isn’t a magical power. According to research, however, it is frequently true. Most of the time, intuition appears when you have expertise in the area, and the body and brain have detected a pattern you haven’t consciously seen. If I have a gut feeling about something, I stop and think about it. Do you want to improve your luck? More often than not, trust your instincts.

Be Positive – If you’re the type of person who thinks the glass is half full, you’re already using positive thinking. Optimism has been shown in studies to reduce stress and help you live longer. But can it also help you be lucky? Absolutely. One of the most challenging aspects of winning is overcoming the nagging feeling that you’ll never win or that if you have, you’ll never win again. It’s challenging to enter things daily with no guarantee of getting anything back, and keeping up with your entries is nearly impossible if you have a negative attitude toward them. So tell yourself that you CAN win.

Have Clarity – Clarity simply means that you know exactly what you want. It is possibly the most crucial luck factor, at least at first. The more confident you are about what you want, the more alert you will be to opportunities and possibilities for achieving them faster. Make it absolutely clear what you want. Every successful person knows exactly who they are, what they want, and what they need to do to get from where they are to where they want to go. Unsuccessful, unhappy people, on the other hand, are frequently unsure of what they stand for and believe in and what they truly desire from their lives.

Get & Stay Connected – Making new friends, finding a new partner, or landing a new job can all come down to knowing the right people. Or, at the very least, a large number of people. I believe that the more people you know, the luckier you will be. When you have a large and diverse social network, you are automatically exposed to more opportunities and may appear ‘luckier.’ So go out and start networking.

Be Open for Change – It’s easier to become set in your ways as you get older. Repetition and habit are comfortable, but learning to accept the possibility of making a change, even if it is small, will keep you open to opportunities and luck that may come your way.

Remember that luck only comes your way when you make room for it. It’s also worth noting that changing your attitude or outlook on life to incorporate such habits isn’t always easy, and you shouldn’t expect it to be. Be patient with yourself and take small steps toward your goal. As you progress, some luck will be there to push you along the way.
