Door ironmongery is a system for securing doors where the door frame is built in, rather than a single piece of cast iron. What are some necessary parts that should be included in your arsenal of door ironmongery? Door ironmongery parts are functionally divided into four categories, they includes;

  1. Door Hinges

These are the most significant part of door ironmongery, as they are the parts which gives support and allows the door to open and close. There are various kinds of hinges, including:

Spring Hinges: Spring hinges are mounted on the edges of a timber frame to accommodate a weighty door. Spring hinges balances their weight with their counterbalance so that a person can lift the door easily. It is necessary for such doors.

Sash Hinges: Sash hinges mount individually on each panel to allow one end of panels to swing outwards while it is fixed on the other side. [Since sash hinges attaches and disengages the panels, they only have one pivot point, so they are more sturdy than spring hinges.]

“D” Hinges: These are a pair of door hinges which contain an arm that moves into the thick beam in the middle of the door and is attached to a strut in one panel and detaches from the strut in another panel. The other end of “D” hinge is attached to joiner plates on both sides of doorway. “D” hinges is used for doors that has ceiling height, because single end of such doors would not be suitable for opening.

  1. Door Closer

This is a device which is used to hold the door tightly after it has been opened. This prevents the door from opening against strong wind and also saves energy. There are various kinds of it, including:

Drum Type: This type of closer uses a spring-loaded pulley inside a small drum that is fixed to the door. The spring makes sure that the drums stays in contact with the door at all times.

Spring Type: It works by pulling a steel leaf along a wide range to open and close with automatic force. These are available in fixed and adjustable types.

Metal Type: It’s a spring-loaded door closer that is operated by a steel rod, which has two notches which trap the rod between them whenever they are opened. The door closer is free to move between fully-open and closed position, but there will be some resistance when it goes fully open because of the weight of the door.

  1. Security Glass

It’s a flat glass or perspex board that is put over the door for protection. The glass is also called as security glass, because it protects house from bad people wanting to escape through the door by hiding behind and breaking through the fixed glass. There are various types of it:

Fixed: It’s a strip of glass that is bent inwards on corners and edges so as to have 2 flat surfaces with one edge of each made visible. This type of security glass can be fixed on top or bottom at either sides of door.

Spring Loaded: It’s a type of security glass which springs open when the door swings fully inwards, and closed when it swings outwards.

  1. Door handle

It’s a mechanical part that allows a person to open and close the door. There are various kinds of door handles, including:

White Knob: It is used on doors which have clear glass panes over it. This type of knob comes in both steel and wood types.

Handle with Hook: It’s a handle that has looped bar attached to the end of it for holding guests’ clothing, bags or boxes in doors. The bar near the bottom also has hooks attached to it, so that guests can hang their coats or handbags from them. (This is called as dog basket).
